Professional recognition in Germany: what facilities should know
Why recognition is not automatic and which factors determine the procedure.

Nursing is a regulated profession in Germany. People wishing to work as nurses with a foreign qualification generally need authorisation to use the professional title. This is based on a recognition procedure with the responsible authority in the relevant federal state.
Equivalence is assessed
The procedure assesses whether foreign training is equivalent to German training. Training content and duration, as well as professional experience, are considered.
Adaptation measures may be required
If significant differences are found, adaptation measures may be needed, such as an adaptation course or knowledge examination. The appropriate measure depends on the individual case and country of origin.
Language is part of the requirements
Sufficient German proficiency is also required for professional authorisation. B2-level evidence is often requested; the precise requirements are set by the responsible authorities.
What facilities can do
Preparing complete documents with suitable translations early saves time. Planning adaptation measures and workplace arrangements together is equally important. The “Recognition in Germany” portal provides authoritative procedural information.
